It is not very well known, how Portuguese water dogs came to be on the coast of Portugal. But they are there for a very long time already. The first written description of the PWD was in 1297 by a monk who witnessed a dog rescue a sailor from the sea off the coast of Portugal. The dog had a “black coat of rough hair, cut to the first rib and with a tuft on the tip of his tail.”
The Portuguese Water Dog became a valued member of the fisherman's crew. At one time the breed existed everywhere along Portugal's coast, where it was taught to herd fish into nets and to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as a courier from ship to ship or ship to shore. The dogs were treasured as crew members of the fishermen and their reward at the end of the day was a share of the day's catch. They were bred according their working ability and their willing to obey the owner.
The dogs were working in hard conditions and were required to obey perfectly. Our days the dogs lost their old purpose as there aren’t need for the messengers in the ships anymore. But they became a perfect family member to a lot of people around the world.

The medium sized dog of 20-25kg with a great friendly character, suitable for families with children. Portuguese water dogs have a great health, and they can withstand anything you can throw at them.
Their coat may be of curly or wavy variety. But in any way they don't shed, so most of the allergical people can have them as a family pet. For example Baraka Obama's daughter has an allergy so they acquired firstly one Portuguese water dog and in a few years’ time they got the second dog too. I can understand them, as I want to have more Portuguese water dogs too.
