Azavaks/Azawakh

Image
EJW 2008, Multi Ch & Multi JCh Bastien's Walad

Country of Origin: Mali
Patronage Country: France
Utilization: Sight hunting. The nomads considered the dog equally as a “show piece” and as a companion.
F.C.I. Classification: Group 10
Section 3: Short haired sighthounds
without working trial

General Appearance: Particularly leggy and elegant, the Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great fineness. His bone structure and musculature is transparent beneath fine and lean tissues (skin). This sighthound presents itself as a rangy dog whose body fits into a rectangle with its longer sides in vertical position.

Important Proportions:
Length of body/height at withers = 9:10. This ratio may be slightly higher in bitches.
Height of chest/height at withers = about 4:10.
Length of muzzle/length of head = 1:2.
Width of skull/length of head = 4:10.

Behavior and Temperament: Quick, attentive, distant, reserved with strangers and may even be savage, but he can be gentle and affectionate with those he is willing to accept.

Head: Long, fine, lean and chiseled, rather narrow, without excess.

Cranial Region: The skull is almost flat, rather elongated. The width of the skull must definitely be inferior to half the length of the head. The directions of the axes of the skull and the muzzle are often slightly divergent towards the front. The superciliary arches and the frontal furrow are slightly marked. On the other hand, the occipital crest is clearly protruding and the occipital protuberance marked.

Facial Region:
Nose: Nostrils well opened. The nose is either black or brown.
Muzzle: Long, straight, fine towards the front without exaggeration.
Jaws: Long and strong.
Cheeks: Flat.
Teeth: Scissor bite.
Eyes: Almond shaped, quite large. Their color is dark or amber. Eyelids are pigmented.
Ears: Set quite high. They are fine, always drooping and flat, quite wide at the base, close to the skull, never a “rose ear”. Their shape is that of a triangle with a slightly rounded tip. Their base raises when the hound is attentive.

Neck: Good reach of neck which is long, fine and muscular, slightly arched. The skin is fine and does not form a dewlap.

Body:
Topline: Nearly straight, horizontal or rising towards the hips.
Withers: Quite prominent.
Loin: Short, lean and often slightly arched.
Hipbones: Distinctly protruding and always placed at an equal or superior height to the height of the withers.
Croup: Oblique without accentuated slant.
Forechest: Not very wide.
Chest: Well developed in length, deep but without reaching elbow level. It is not very wide but must have enough space for the heart, so, the sternal region of the chest must not abruptly become narrow.
Ribs: Long, visible, slightly and evenly curved down to the sternum.
Underline: The sternal arch is accentuated and joined without abruptness to the belly which is tucked up very high below the lumbar arch.
Tail: Set low, long, thin, lean and tapered. Is covered with the same type of hair as that of the body and has a white brush at its extremity. Is carried hanging with the tip slightly raised, but when the dog is excited, it can be carried above the horizontal.

Quarters:

Forequarters:
Seen as a whole: Long, fine, almost entirely vertical; set perfectly well-set.
Shoulders: Long, lean and muscular and only slight slanting seen in profile. The scapulo-humeral angle is very open (about 130o).
Feet: Rounded shape, with fine and tightly closed toes; the pads are pigmented.

Hindquarters:
Seen as a whole: Long and lean; legs perfectly vertical.
Thighs: Long with prominent and lean muscles. The coxo-femoral angle is very open (about 130o).
Stifle: The femoro-tibial angle is very open (about 145o).
Hock: Hock joint and hock are straight and lean, without dewclaws.
Feet: Round shaped - pads are pigmented.

Gait - Movement: Always very supple (lissome) and with particularly high action at the trot and the walk. The gallop is leaping. The Azawakh gives a great impression of lightness, even elasticity. The movement is an essential point of the breed.

Skin: Fine, tight over the whole body.

Coat
Hair: Short, fine, down to none on the belly.
Color: Fawn with flecking limited to the extremities. All shades are admitted from clear sand to dark red. The head may or may not have a black mask and the list is very inconsistent. The coat includes a white bib and a white brush at the tip of the tail. Each of the four limbs must have compulsorily a white “stocking”, at least in the shape of tracing on the foot. Black brindles are allowed.

Size and Weight

Height at the withers: Dogs: between 64 and 74 cm. (25-29 inches)
Bitches: between 60 and 70 cm. (23 1/2 - 27 1/2 inches)

Weight: Dogs: about 20-27 kg. (44-55 lbs.)
Bitches: about 15-20 kg. (33-44 lbs.)

Faults: Any departure from the foregoing should be considered a fault and the seriousness of which shall be penalized in exact proportion to its degree.
General appearance: heavy
Body too long
Wide back skull
Prominent stop
Hipbones placed distinctly lower than withers
Significant flesh coloring/depigmentation

Eliminating faults:

Lack of type (in particular translating as a recent crossing with another breed)
Size deviating from more than three centimeters (a little more than an inch) from the norms of the standard.
Prominent non-accidental anatomical deformation.
Non acquired disabling anomaly.
All spotted crippling defects.
Ribs curving in reverse at the bottom of the chest which gives the aspect of a “violin case”.
Overshot or undershot bite.
Harsh or semi-long coat
Coat not identical to the standard
Absence of any white marking at the extremity of one or more limbs.
Light eyes; ie. bird of prey eyes.
Timid character, panicky or aggressive to the point of attack.

Note: Males must have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Measurement equal from occiput to inner corner of eye and from inner corner of eye to tip of nose. Skull very slightly domed and narrow, stop imperceptible. Head fine so that bones and principal veins can be clearly seen. Viewed from side, forehead and upper line of muzzle form an almost straight, slightly convex line. Jaws long, deep and powerful; nose large and black, nicely rounded, neither cornered nor sharp. Viewed from above skull should look narrow, converging very gradually to tip of nose. Occipital process very accentuated.

Eyes

Dark with intelligent, keen and alert expression. Almond-shaped, set obliquely and placed well back but not too wide apart. Eye rims dark. Eyes not light, round, bulbous or staring.

Passing through Laconie (Greece), where numerous representations on vases and bowls confirm this, the breed arrived in Italy at the outset of the 5th century BC. Its greatest development occured during the era of the Renaissance at the court of the nobles. It is not rare to find the Italian Greyhound represented in the paintings of the greatest Italian and foreign masters.

FCI standarts Nr. 269 (29.11.2000.)

Acis: Acu krāsa no tumši brūnas līdz gaišbrūnai.

Mugura: Diezgan plata.
Jostasvieta: Viegli izliekta un muskuļota.
Krusti: Gūžas kauli viens no otra tālu novietoti.

Skotu dīrhaunds/Scottish Deerhound

Image
Ch Ardneish Enya

General Appearance

Resembles a roughcoated greyhound of larger size and bone.

Characteristics
The build suggests the unique combination of speed, power and endurance necessary to pull down a stag, but general bearing is one of gentle dignity.

Temperament

Gentle and friendly. Obedient and easy to train because eager to please. Docile and good-tempered, never suspicious, aggressive or nervous. Carries himself with quiet dignity.

Head and Skull
Broadest at ears, tapering slightly to eyes, muzzle tapering more decidedly to nose, lips level. Head long, skull flat rather than round, with very slight rise over eyes, with no stop. Skull coated with moderately long hair, softer than rest of coat. Nose slightly aquiline and black. In lighter coloured dogs black muzzle preferred. Good moustache of rather silky hair and some beard.

Eyes
Dark. Generally dark brown or hazel. Light eyes undesirable. Moderately full with a soft look in repose, but keen, far away look when dog is roused. Rims black.

Ears

Set on high and in repose folded back. In excitement raised above head without losing the fold and in some cases semi-erect. A big thick ear hanging flat to the head or a prick ear most undesirable. Ear soft, glossy and like a mouse’s coat to the touch; the smaller the better, no long coat or fringe. Ears black or dark coloured.

Mouth

Jaws strong, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Neck

Very strong with good reach sometimes disguised by mane. Nape of neck very prominent where head is set on, no throatiness.

Forequarters

Shoulders well laid, not too far apart. Loaded and straight shoulders undesirable. Forelegs straight, broad and flat, a good broad forearm and elbow being desirable.

Body
Body and general formation that of a greyhound of larger size and bone. Chest deep rather than broad, not too narrow and flat-sided. Loin well arched and drooping to tail. Flat topline undesirable.

Hindquarters
Drooping, broad and powerful, hips set wide apart. Hindlegs well bent at stifle with great length from hip to hock. Bone broad and flat.

Feet
Compact and well knuckled. Nails strong.

Tail
Long, thick at root, tapering and reaching almost to ground. When standing dropped perfectly straight down or curved. Curved when moving, never lifted above line of back. Well covered with hair; on upper side thick and wiry, on under side longer, and towards end a slight fringe is not objectionable. A curl or ring tail undesirable.

Gait/Movement
Easy, active and true, with a long stride.

Coat
Shaggy, but not overcoated. Woolly coat unacceptable. The correct coat is thick, close-lying, ragged; harsh or crisp to the touch. Hair on body, neck and quarters harsh and wiry about 8 cms (3 ins) to 10 cms (4 ins) long; that on head, breast and belly much softer. A slight hairy fringe on inside of fore- and hindlegs.

Colour
Dark blue-grey, darker and lighter greys or brindles and yellows, sandy-red or red fawns with black points. A white chest, white toes and a slight white tip to stern are permissible but the less white the better, since it is a self-coloured dog. A white blaze on head or white collar unacceptable.

Size
Height: dogs: minimum desirable height at withers 76 cms (30 ins); bitches: 71 cms (28 ins). Weight: dogs: about 45.5 kg (100 lbs); bitches: about 36.5 kgs (80 lbs).

Faults

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

General Appearance
Elegant, racy yet strong, without coarseness. A dignified hound with fine skin marked by its muscular leanness. Capable of sustained effort over long distances.

Characteristics

Quiet, of dignified bearing. Noble, haughty and extremely expressive with the instincts of a hunting hound.

Temperament

Loyal to owner, affectionate with family, aloof with strangers.

Head and Skull
Long, refined, an elongated wedge showing strength but not excessively angular. Skull flat, fairly broad. Clearly rounded at back of skull and curving smoothly into sides. Slightly marked frontal bone and pronounced occiput. Muzzle refined without exaggeration, about equal in length to skull. Slight stop. Nose and lips black.

Eyes
Large, dark, oval, set slightly obliquely. Expression gentle, rather sad and wistful. In light-coated hounds, lighter eyes permissible.

Ears

Not too large, triangular in shape but with rounded tips; flat. Usually folding down and carried close to head, set level with, or slightly above eye but may be carried away from the skull or sometimes even thrown backwards.

Mouth

Jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Neck
Strong yet very elegant in proportion to body. Moderately long with good arch. Skin slightly loose, making fine pleats under throat.

Forequarters
Shoulder blades long and set obliquely onto body. Flat bone and well muscled. Upper arm of moderate length. Pasterns supple and strong.

Body
Chest not broad. Prominent sternum. Slightly sprung ribs giving fairly flat appearance, reaching almost to point of elbow. Reasonably well ribbed back with definite tuck up. Loin short, broad and muscular, and slightly arched. Topline almost level. Relatively short croup, obliquely set. Pin bones prominent.

Hindquarters
Strongly muscled. Fairly flat appearance with moderate angulation, Second thigh long and well-developed. Hocks well let down.

Feet
Lean, elongated hare foot, fairly well arched.

Tail
Fine and well set on without fringes or long hair. Strong curve at end which preferably reaches to point of hock. Set in line with croup as a continuation of topline. When moving never carried higher than level of back.

Gait/Movement
Free, smooth, effortless gait, head carriage not too high. Without exaggerated extension.

Coat
Fine and short. Undercoat may grow during winter.

Colour
Colour ranges from light sand to red sand (fawn), with or without black mask, black mantle, black brindling or black overlay. Excessive white undesirable.

Size
Height at withers: dogs 66-72 cms (26-28¼ ins), bitches 61-68 cms (24-26¾ ins).

Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
